IELTS Writing Task 2: Opinion Essays
The first part of the question will be a statement, followed by:
– What is your opinion?
– Do you agree or disagree?
– To what extent do you agree or disagree?
EXAMPLE
Education is not a luxury, but a basic human right and as such should be free for everyone irrespective of personal wealth. Do you agree or disagree? (Write at least 250 words.)
SAMPLE
Many people believe that education is a fundamental human right and should be available to everyone regardless of their financial status. I strongly agree that free access to quality education plays a vital role in improving social equality in addition to accelerating economic growth.
Education can bring significant economic benefits, as it fosters innovation, enhances productivity of the human resource, which is a leading determinant of economic growth. In fact, many developed countries like Germany or Finland offer their citizens zero-cost learning opportunities. Their commitment to provide tuition-free programs indeed helps increase the number of highly-skilled workers, the amount of foreign investment and promote the creation of new businesses, which stimulates economic development and eradicates poverty.
Furthermore, ensuring equal access to education is a key factor in promoting social equality because it enables people to stay in school, gain knowledge, skills and experience to develop themselves and reach their full potential. As technologies like automation, artificial intelligence may eliminate a large number of human workers, forcing millions of people into unemployment, education can equip workers with new skills. This allows them to stay in the workforce, continue to generate income and hence, helps decrease the wealth gap between different social classes. Highly-educated individuals also have a better understanding and a higher level awareness of social issues. Therefore, they are more likely to take actions and make contributions to tackle these problems.
In conclusion, I believe that education can benefit individuals and society by reducing poverty, enhancing equality, and promoting social inclusion. Therefore, it is crucial to invest more in tuition-less education, while ensuring its quality and accessibility.
